George Alexander Trebek famously known as Alex Trebek. He was born in the year 1920 and died recently months ago in November,2020 at the age of 80. He worked as a host for the show Jeopardy! Which was the highlight of his life since he hosted 37 seasons. He also hosted a number of other game shows, including The Wizard of Odds, Double Dare, High Rollers, Battlestars, Classic Concentration, and To Tell the Truth. Trebek also made appearances in numerous television series, in which he usually played himself. He also holds the Guinness World Record for the “most game show episodes hosted by the same presenter.” He also had several nominations and has won numerous awards for his work.

Alex Trebek’s Early Life

Trebek was born on July 22,1940 in Sudbury, Canada to a French-Canadian mother, Lucille Lagacé and a Ukrainian immigrant father, George Edward Trebek who worked as a hotel chef. Trebek pursued his primary education by attending Jesuit school, later on he went to boarding school in Ottawa.

Since he was bought up in a bilingual French-English childhood, he was eloquent in languages such as English and French, and he studied philosophy in the University of Ottawa. He used to manage all his expenses, majorly tuition fees by working part-time at Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) Radio. As he completed his graduation in 1961, he continued to work there itself in CBC and had transformed his job from part-time to full-time.

Alex Trebek’s Career

Trebek started his career as a full-time position of staff announcer at the CBC in Ottawa, providing news, weather updates and sports reports on regional audio and television broadcasts. He was then promoted to national staff announcer and had shifted to Toronto. He was perfect at his job. He delivered his materials with great poise, calmness, pauses and composure. This led to the beginning of his anchoring career. He started hosting a wide range of programs. Trebek’s debut hosting job was for the Canadian music program “Music Hop” in 1963. He did numerous shows later on.

In the year 1984 – He started hosting for the show Jeopardy and continued to remain his host until his death in 2020. Trebek has received various awards for his phenomenal work. He has won  Outstanding Game Show Host Emmy Awards (1989, 1990, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2019, and 2020) and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

He received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame in Toronto.

On November 4, 2010- The Royal Canadian Geographical Society‘s gold medal for his contribution to geographic education and the popular study of geography.

In 2011- One of the recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Daytime Emmy Awards. Trebek has held a Guinness World Record for “the most gameshow episodes hosted by the same presenter (same program)” for having hosted 6,829 episodes of Jeopardy!

Alex Trebek’s Personal Life

Trebek first married to Elaine Callei in 1974. The couple had no children, but Callei was divorced so her daughter Nicky from her previous marriage was adopted by Trebek. In the year 1981, Trebek and Callei got divorced. Then, later on in the year 1990 he married Jean Currivan who was a real estate project Manager from New York by profession. They had two children, Matthew and Emily.

In 2001, his moustache was much in news during Jeopardy’s 18th season when he shaved the moustache, he had groomed for over 30 years.

On December 2015, he suffered a minor heart attack but fortunately he recovered. On March 6,2019 Trebek announced that he has been diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer. On November 8, 2020 after fighting for over 18 months he passed away at his home in Los Angeles.
