Bernard Sanders, goes by the name Bernie Sanders, was in the news for a recently, creating headlines on various social networking platforms since unintentionally he became a part of a meme campaign. But Bernie Sanders is more than just a meme. He is an American politician by profession. He was first elected in 2006 to represent Vermont in the U.S. Senate and in the following year took the office. From 1981–89 he served as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives in the tenure of 1991–2007).  Adding on to this, he sought the Democratic nomination in the U.S. presidential elections of 2016-20.

He was born on September 8, 1941 in Brooklyn, New York, U.S. to Jewish Parents who were of Polish descent. He did not come from a financially stable family. He grew up in the Flatbush Area of Brooklyn and faced enormous amount of financial issues.

But this did not stop him from completing his education. He completed his high school from Brooklyn College. Thereafter, he went to complete his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Chicago in the year 1964. While studying there, he had already started his political career, he indulged in the civil rights movement, and in the year 1963 he participated in the March on Washington.

After pursuing his education, he stayed in Israel for a brief period and then returned back to United States. This is where his full-fledged campaign and programs begun.  Sanders moved to Vermont, participating in the communal back-to-the-land movement. Then, he was a freelancing journalist. But he became active in the anti-Vietnam War movement, which magnetized him into politics.

In the year 1972, 1976, and 1986 he made several bids as governor in Vermont, which turned out to be unsuccessful. Also, to be mentioned he was standing individually in all those campaigns.

In 1988 Sanders ran for the U.S. House of Representatives but lost. Two years later, however, he was elected to the body. In 2006 Sanders ran for the U.S. Senate and easily won. In 2010 he held the floor for nearly nine hours in a filibuster against the extension of the Bush tax cuts. Apart from tax and social-welfare matters, Sanders sponsored bills and amendments that mostly concerned climate change, veterans’ affairs, and renewable energy.

In April 2015 Sanders announced that he was entering the U.S. presidential election race of 2016. As Hillary Clinton was widely acclaimed as solitary leader, his candidacy was initially dismissed. He primarily focused on democratic issues thus included universal health care, tax increases on the wealthy, and free tuition at public universities and colleges. Sanders and Clinton were having aN edge-to-edge count initially but later on Sanders trailed behind. In July Sanders officially endorsed Clinton, who had claimed the       party’s nomination the previous month

 Sanders published Our Revolution: A future to believe in when Clinton lost to Trump in Presidential Elections. He promptly became a frontrunner. But his progressive and primary agenda was his electability in a general election

Sanders first got married in the year 1964 to the girl he met in college, Deborah Shiling Messing, they both volunteered for several months together for one of their campaigns. But the fate of their marriage did not last long and they got divorced. They had no children. Sanders has only one biological son who goes by the name Levi Sanders. He was born to Susan Campbell Mott in 1969 who was his then girlfriend. On May 28, 1988, Sanders married Jane O’Meara Driscoll, after seven years of courtship, who was a divorcee herself. Sanders considers Jane’s three children—Dave Driscoll, Carina Driscoll and Heather Titus to be his own.  He is also a grandfather now with seven grandchildren.
