Charlie Rene Strong is a former American football player. He is also a football defensive analyst for Alabama. Prior to that, he was the head coach at the University of South Florida. He was also the head coach at the University of Louisville. He had been the assistant coaching numerous times at Louisville before he became the head coach for four years. He led the Cardinals to a 37-35 record. Under him, they reached a bowl game each season, even the 2013 Super Bowl.

Charlie Strong was born on 2 August 1960 in Batesville, Arkansas, United States. His mother’s name is Delois Ramsey and his father is Charles Strong. His father was a teacher and coach in Luxora, Arkansas. Charlie’s parents never got married. He has five siblings. He grew up with his aunt and her six children in a blended household.

Charlie Strong Education

Charlie Strong did his schooling from Batesville High School in Batesville, Arkansas. At the University of Central Arkansas, he was a letterman for four years from 1980-1983 as a defensive back. In 1983 he joined the coaching staff of University of Florida as a graduate assistant. After this, he served as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M in the year 1985. He received a masters degree from Henderson State University. He also received a masters degree and an education specialist degree from the University of Florida. He is even a member of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. The founders of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity wished to create a community where each potential member is judged based on their merit and capability and not according to the family they belong to. Its idea was to view itself as part of the general community than being apart from it.

Charlie Strong Career

It was in 1986 that Charlie Strong got to be a full-time coach. He coached the key position of wide receivers or the wideout at Southern Illinois. Later he took up defensive coaching duties at Florida, Ole Miss and Notre Dame.

Strong then joined the South Carolina Gamecocks as defensive coordinator in 1999. His stifling defences and charming personality created a lot of buzz. It was also assumed that he might become the first black head coach in the Southeastern Conference (SEC). But job offers than were not much. Eventually, in 2004, Sylvester Croom broke the colour barrier in SEC becoming the first African-American head football coach in the SEC.

The Florida Gaters football team hired Strong as defensive coordinator before the 2003 college football season. Strong also served as the interim coach of the Gators for one game, the December 2004 Peach Bowl, when the head coach Ron Zook was fired midway through the 2004 season.

In 2009 Strong became the 21st head coach at the University of Louisville. He led Louisville to victory in 2013 Super Bowl defeating Florida Gators. They won by a final score of 33-23. In 2013 Strong became he 7th highest-paid active coach in college football after he was given a raise of $1.4 million. At the same time, he also became the highest-paid coach outside the SEC, Big 12 and Big Ten conferences.

In 2005 Strong accepted to become the head football coach at the University of Texas. He signed a 5-year contract worth $5 million annually. Strong became Texas football programs’ first black head coach. He was fired from the position of head coach in 2016 after Texas lost 3 seasons in a row.

In the 2016 University of Florida named Strong as their 4th head coach. After the 2019 season, he was fired from the position, following which he joined Alabama Crimson Tide football team. He worked under Nick Saban as a defensive analyst and they won the 2021 College Football Playoff National Championship.

According to some news sources, Strong will now join the Jacksonville Jaguars in his first Nation Football League (NFL) as an assistant coach under Urban Meyer. He will supposedly take up the role to coach the linebackers position.
