Gordan James Ramsay is a British Chef, restaurateur, writer and a television personality. His global restaurant chain, Gordan Ramsay Restaurants which he founded in 1997 has been awarded a total of 16 Michelin stars.

Gordan Ramsay Early Life and Family

Gordan Ramsay was born on 8 November 1966 in Johnstone, Renfrewshire, Scotland. He was raised in the Bishopton area of Stratford-upon-Avon, England since the age of nine. His mother, Helen Cosgrave was a nurse and his father, Gordan James Sr was a welder, shopkeeper and swimming pool manager. He has three siblings, an older sister, a younger brother and a younger sister.

During his early life, his family moved constantly due to aspirations and failures of his father until they finally settled in Stratford-upon-Avon in 1976. He and his sister worked as a pot washer and a waitress respectively at a local Indian restaurant. In his autobiography, Ramsay describes his childhood as being marked by abuse and neglect by his father who he refers to as “hard-drinking womanizer”. His father was sometimes a violent alcoholic.

Ramsay moved out of his family home when he was 16 and moved into a flat in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

Gordan Ramsay Personal Life

Gordan Ramsay is married to Cayetana Elizabeth Hutcheson in 1996. She is a Montessori-trained teacher, an author of several cookery books and a TV Broadcaster. The couple divides their time between Wandsworth Common, London and Los Angeles, California. They are parents to five children namely Megan Ramsay, twins Holly Anna Ramsay and Jack Scott Ramsay, Matilda Ramsay and Oscar Ramsay.

Megan did her majors in psychology. In 2017, she ran the London Marathon in memory of her mother’s miscarriage in June 2016. Holly is quite popular on Instagram and does some modelling with Est Models and Talent Agency. Jack has joined the United Kingdom’s Royal Maries which is part of UK’s Navy. Matilda, like her father, is a chef best known for presenting the BBC cooking show Matilda and the Ramsay Bunch. Oscar is still an infant.

Gordan Ramsay Education

Gordan Ramsay’s interest in cooking had already begun by this time. At the age of 19, he decided to pay more serious attention to his culinary education. He was sponsored by the Rotarians to study Hotel Management at North OxfordshireTechnical College. According to Ramsay his decision to enter a catering college was a complete accident.

Gordan Ramsay Career

Gordan Ramsay worked as a commis chef Wroxton House Hotel in the 1980s. then he moved to London. Here he got a chance to work under chef Marco Pierre White at Harveys. After working there for more than two and a half years he worked for chef Albert Roux at Le Gavroche in Mayfair and Hotel Diva, a ski resort in French Alps. From there he shifted base to Paris to work with Michelin-starred chefs Guy Savoy and Joel Robuchon and learn French cuisine.

He returned to London in 1993, upon which he was offered the position of head chef at the three-Michelin-starred La Tante Claire, Chelsea. He worked here under chef-patron Pierre Koffmann.

Ramsay with the help of his father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson finally opened his restaurant, Restaurant Gordan Ramsay in Chelsea. In 2001 Ramsay became the first Scot whose restaurant three Michelin stars. Restaurant Gordan Ramsay was ranked second best in the UK by The Good Food Guide in 2011. After this Ramsay’s empire saw rapid growth. He opened Petrus In London, Amaryllis in Glasgow (which he was forced to close later) and Claridge’s in Mayfair. Outside UK Ramsay opened restaurants namely Verre in Dubai; Gordan Ramsay at Conrad Tokyo and Cerise by Gordan Ramsay in Tokyo, Japan (opened in 2005), Gordan Ramsay at the London (opened in 2006) in New York, Gordan Ramsay at Powerscourt in Ireland (closed in 2013), Laurier Gordan Ramsay in Montreal, Canada (opened in 2011 and closed in 2013).

Gordan Ramsay Awards

Gordan Ramsay has won multiple awards during his career. He is only the third person to win three Catey Awards. He won it in 1995 for Newcomer of the Year, in 2000 for Chef of the Year and 2006 for Independent Restaurateur of the Year.

Ramsay also holds a Guinness World Record for the fastest time to fillet a 10lb fish. He did it in a record 1 minute 5 seconds on 14 June 2017. He also holds a record for the Longest Pasta Sheet Rolled in 60 seconds measuring 1.45 metres.

The net worth of Gordan Ramsay is estimated to be $220 million. He owns three houses in Cornwell whose estimated worth is 11 million Euro. He has a 4 million Euro mansion in Trebethrick and a 4.4 million Euro property in a coastal fishing village in Cornwell called Rock.
