Jerome Allen Seinfeld aka Jerry Seinfeld is an American comedian, actor, producer and writer. He specializes in observational comedy as a stand-up comedian. In 2004, he was named the 12th greatest standup comedian of all time by Comedy Central. Apart from that, he is best known for playing a semi-fictionalized version of himself in the sitcom, Seinfeld which aired on NBC from 1989 to 1998. He wrote and created the show with Larry David. It is one of the most acclaimed and popular American sitcoms of all time.

Jerry Seinfeld Early Life and Family

Jerry Seinfeld was born on 29 April 1954 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. He grew up in Massapequa, New York. His father Kalman Seinfeld collected jokes he heard while serving in World War II. He was of the Hungarian-Jewish descent. Jerry’s mother, Betty was Mizrahi Jew from Aleppo, Syria.

Actor-musician Evan Seinfeld is his second cousin.

When Jerry was 16, he spent time volunteering at the Kibbutz Sa’ar in Israel.

Jerry Seinfeld married to author and philanthropist, Jessica Sklar on 25 December 1999. They first met in August 1998. After the wedding, the couple bought singer Billy Joey’s house in Amagansett, Long Island. They have three children together, a daughter Sascha and two sons, Julian Kal and Shepherd Kellen.

Jerry Seinfeld did his schooling from Massapequa High School on Long Island, New York.

He attended the State University of New York in Oswego till the second year. He then transferred to Queens College, City University of New York. During this time, he developed an interest in stand-up comedy after brief stints in college productions and also appeared on open-mic nights at Budd Friedman’s Improv Club. He graduated with a degree in communications and theatre in 1976.

After graduation, Jerry Seinfeld tried an open-mic night at New York City’s Catch a Rising Star. This led to his appearance in a Rodney Dangerfield HBO special. In 1980, he played the role of Frankie, a mail delivery boy who had comedy routines no one was interested to hear, in the sitcom, Benson.

In 1981 he impressed John Carson and the audience on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. This led to him frequently appearing on the show as well as others like Late Night with David Letterman

His first one-hour special Stand-Up Confidential aired live on HBO on 5 September 1987.

In 1988 Jerry Seinfeld created the sitcom, ‘The Seinfeld Chronicles’, which was later renamed ‘Seinfeld’ with Larry David. This show which aired on NBC became the most-watched sitcom on American television by its third season. Apart from Seinfeld the show also starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards and Jason Alexander. Its final episode aired in 1998.

After the sitcom ended, Seinfeld returned to New York from Los Angeles to make a comeback with his stand-up comedy. In 1998 he also went on a tour and recorded I’m Telling You for the Last Time, a comedy special. In a 2002 documentary named Comedian, the process of developing and performing new material at clubs was chronicled. It was directed by Christian Charles.

Seinfeld in 2012 started a web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. In each episode, he would pick up a fellow comedian in a different car and take them out for conversation and coffee. The show which originally aired on Crackle streaming service was later bought by Netflix.

As part of a deal, he signed with Netflix in January 2017, all episodes of the Seinfeld and Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee would be made available on the streaming service along with two new Seinfeld specials and the development of a scripted and non-scripted comedy programme.

Netflix on 19 September 2017 released the stand-up comedy special, Jerry Before Seinfeld. The special which was released as an album was nominated for the Best Comedy Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards.

The show, 23 Hours To Kill was premiered on Netflix on 5 May 2020. The show is Seinfeld’s first original stand-up special in 22 years.
