Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is a very renowned Pakistani musician. He is primarily known for his Qawwali which is the devotional music of the Muslim Sufis. Other than Qawwali he also performs ghazals and light music. He is also a popular playback singer in the Hindi film industry as well as that of Pakistan.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Early Life And Family

Rahah was born on 9 December 1974 in Faisalabad in the Punjab province of Pakistan. He comes from a Punjabi family of classical singers and Qawwals. He is the grandson of classical singer and Qawwal musician Fateh Ali Khan. Rahat’s father is Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, a Qawwali harmonium player. He is the nephew of the legendary Pakistani vocalist, musician and Qawwali singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Rahat had an interest in music from a very young age. He was as young as three when he used to sing with his father and uncle. He has been trained in the art of singing Qawwali since the age of seven by his uncle.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is married to Nida Rahat. They got married in the year 2001. They have three children, Shazmaan Khan, Filza Khan and Maheen Khan.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Career

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan was nine when he performed publicly for the first time. He performed at the death anniversary of his grandfather. He became an integral part of his Nusrat’s well known Qawwali group. He toured with them in 1985. Along with being in the Qawwali group he also did solo performances in different concerts. In April 2002 toured to the UK. Here he performed at the Wembley Arena and the Manchester Arena. He played to a combined audience of over 20,000 people hereby creating the record of maximum ticket sales.

His debut song in the Hindi film industry was Mann Ki Laganfor the 2003 film, Paap. He went on to sing various Hindi songs such as O Re Piya, Teri Ore, Jag Soona Soona Lage, Dil Toh Bachcha Hai Ji and Tere Mast Mast Do Nain among others.

His song Zaroori Tha from his 2014 album Back 2 Love crossed 100 million views after 2 years and 200 million within 3 years making it the first original non-film music video from the Indian-subcontinent to reach this milestone.

Rahat was invited to perform at the concert at 2014 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Thus he became the first Pakistani to perform at any Nobel Prize concert. He performed Aao Parhao and also his uncle’s most memorable Qawwali Tumhe Dillagi and Mast Qalandar.

Rahat has contributed to the soundtrack album Dead Man Walking which was released in 1996 for the Hollywood film of the same name. he has also collaborated with American composer and orchestrator, James Horner for the soundtrack of the 2002 war drama film The Four Feathers. Rahat’s vocals have even been featured in the soundtrack of Mel Gibson’s film Apocalypto in 2006.

Rahat has been seen on Indian television as a judge on a few music reality shows. He was a judge alongside Indian singer Sonu Nigam in the singing competition show Chote Ustaad which premiered in television in 2017. He was one of the judges of Junoon, a singing reality show which premiered in 2008 on NDTV Imagine.

He has his soundtracks featured in Pakistani serials as well. His first one was Ishq Bhi Hai Chuban for the serial Chuban. Some others of these are Ishq Junoon Deewangi, Laal Ishq, Koi Chand Rakh, Bharday Jholy and Mann Bawra Lage Na Kaheen.

His songs in Pakistani films include songs like Rab Kise Di Na Todhe, Rab Diyan Rab Jaane, Dil Faqeer, Sajan Bina Raina and Zehal-e-Miskeen.

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan Awards

Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has won many awards and recognition in the course of his career. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the University of Oxford in 2019. In the same year, he also won the Wembley Arena Award. He has won four awards each at the Lux Style Awards and UK Asian Music Awards.

He won the Best Male Singer at The Pakistan Media Award of Merit (PMA) which is one of Pakistan’s cinematic awards fr which a formal ceremony is held each year.
