In November 2012 Chaudhary was arrested on charges of extortion along with his colleague, Sameer Ahluwalia. They were ultimately released on bail after being sent to 14-day judicial custody at the Tihar jail. The money was supposed to be in exchange for dropping stories that linked the Jindal group and the Coalgate scam. Due to this, Chaudhary who was serving as the Treasurer of the Broadcast Editors Association was suspended from his post. After scrutinising the video footage from the incident, the Association determined that Chaudhary did act in a manner which was prejudicial to their interest and objectives. However, the Jindal group in November 2018 wrote to the investigating agencies to withdraw the allegation against Chaudhary and Ahluwalia. They also requested to file a closure report in the case.

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra had filed a criminal defamation case against Chaudhary after he accused her of plagiarising the speech of American commentator Martin Longman. Moitra was trolled for this and Longman came out in support of her and denied the accusation. Chaudhary after this accepted that only a part of Moitra’s speech was broadcasted and showed his regrets. Though Zee Media on its behalf filed a defamation case against Moitra for calling it ‘paid news’.
