Cruise was born on July 3, 1962 to Thomas Cruise Mapother III who was an electrical engineer by profession and Mary Lee who was a special education teacher by profession. He was born in Syracuse, New York. Cruise has three siblings named Lee Anne, Marian, and Cass. 

Cruise had a rough childhood majorly because of his unkind and unsupportive father. He later described his father as a “bully”, “coward”, “merchant of chaos” and also mentioned that “[my father] was the kind of person where, if something goes wrong, they kick you”. He grew up in utter poverty and had a catholic upbringing. 

He, later on, shifted to Canada where his father took a job as a defense consultant with the Canadian Armed Forces. His family moved in late 1971 to Ottawa where he attended Robert Hopkins Public School for his fourth and fifth-grade education where he had his first encounter with drama. Cruise’s childhood was full of turbulences. In his sixth grade, he changed his school, and in the same year, his mother left his father and traveled back to the United States. In the year 1978, his mother married Jack South. Then later on in 1980, he graduated from Glen Ridge High School in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. In the year 1984, his dad died from cancer. He also has a cousin named William Mapother, who has appeared alongside Cruise in five films.

Cruise shifted to New York at the age of 18 to start his acting career. He had constant support from his mother and step-father. He made his debut in a film called Endless Love in the year 1981, soon he grabbed another role in the very same year of a crazed military academy student in Taps. Thereafter he was a part of many films and did major roles. In the year 1988, all his hard work paid off when he starred with Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, which won the Academy Award for the Best Film and Cruise won the Kansas City Film Critics Circle Award for the Best Supporting Actor. And after this film there was no looking back, he won several awards for his acting in various films and also got nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for his phenomenal role in the film ‘Born on Fourth of July’.

Then later on in the year 1996, glory was added to his cap when Cruise appeared in the reboot of Mission: Impossible which was undoubtedly a major success. Cruise has been in several relationships in his past. On May 9, 1987, he got married to actress Mimi Rogers. But unfortunately, it did not last long and they got divorced on Feb 4, 1990. But Rogers was the one who introduced Cruise to Scientology.

Cruise met actress Nicole Kidman, his second wife on the set of Thunder in the year 1990. The couple got married in the same year on Dec 24 and adopted two children Isabelle Jane and Connor Antony born in 1992 and 1995 respectively.

His second marriage surely lasted longer than the previous one but did not last forever. In February 2001, Cruise filed for divorce when Kidman was unknowingly pregnant. Later in 2007, she clarified that she had an ectopic pregnancy hence suffered a miscarriage.

 Cruise had a relationship with Penélope Cruz, his co-star in Vanilla Sky. Their relationship ended in 2004. 

Next in April 2005, Cruise began dating actress Katie Holmes. On October 6, 2005, Cruise and Holmes announced they were expecting a child. In April 2006, their daughter Suri was born. On November 18, Holmes and Cruise got married. On June 29, 2012, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise. On July 9, the couple signed a divorce settlement worked out by their lawyers.
