Tom Selleck was born on 29 January 1945 in Detroit, Michigan, USA. His father, Robert Dean Selleck was an executive and real estate investor and his mother Martha Selleck was a homemaker. Both his parents had English ancestry though his father had a German ancestry as well. Selleck has three siblings, an older brother Robert, a younger brother Daniel and a sister Martha. During his childhood, his family moved to Sherman Oaks, California.
On his paternal side, Selleck is a direct descendant of English colonist, David Selleck. In 1663, David Selleck moved from Somerset, England to Massachusetts. Tom Selleck is the 11th generation of the Selleck family born in North America.

Tom Selleck married television actress Jacqueline Ray in 1971. At that time Selleck was relatively unknown in the entertainment industry. He adopted Ray’s son, Kevin from her previous marriage. Kevin took his last name and is known as Kevin Selleck. Kevin is an actor and former drummer of the rock band, Tonic. Selleck and Ray divorced in 1982.
Tom Selleck married again in 1987. He married actress and dancer Jillie Joan Mack. The couple has a daughter Hannah Margaret. After Hannah’s birth, Selleck quit Magnum PI, took a break from work and moved to Ventura County, California to focus on his family life.
Hannah is now an accomplished equestrian. She secured the second place in the 2007 Pessoa/ U.S. Equestrian Federation (USEF) Medal Finals. She won a gold medal at the 2008 North American Youth Championships. She also won in the 2008 USEF Show Jumping Talent Search Finals.

Tom Selleck first appeared on television on The Dating Show as a college senior in 1965 and again in 1987. Soon after, he was seen in commercials for products like Pepsi-Cola.
He began his film career with small roles in smaller films such as Myra Breckinridge, Coma and The Seven Minutes. Selleck appeared in various commercials for the brand including Right Guard, Dubonnet, SafeGuard and Close-up. At the time he was still a struggling unfamiliar television actor.
His big break came with American crime-drama television series Magnum PI (1980- 1988), where he played the lead role of Thomas Magnum. His character Magnum drove a Ferrari 308 GTS which became so identified by him that Ferrari fans now refer to the red-painted model as Magnum Ferrari.
